For many of the Thais who come here, Dusit Zoo is more a place of entertainment than education, hence the paddle boats and arcade games. That said, the range of species and decent English-language labeling make it a worthwhile stop for ecotourists.

The zoo is also an excellent destination for families with young children. It's lush and green with plenty of places to play, sit down or picnic. Youngsters will enjoy the seal shows (three times a day on weekdays, more often on weekends and holidays; free) and elephant displays.

Among the more interesting animals here are red-shanked doucs (a monkey species native to Indochina), long-tailed macaques, chimpanzees, giraffes, tigers, leopards and pygmy hippos from West Africa. Surprisingly, given their high profile in Thailand, elephants aren't especially prominent in the zoo.

The snake and lizard section is excellent, and there's also a nocturnal house where several civet species can be seen. The zoo museum lacks complete English labeling but has some displays about different habitats and threats to wildlife such as pollution and deforestation.

The food court offers standard local rice and noodle dishes at reasonable prices; there's a well-stocked 7-Eleven branch within the zoo grounds.

The zoo is located between Dusit Palace and Chitralada Palace. Take the Skytrain to Victory Monument (N3), then bus 18, 28 or 108 from the southwestern side of the traffic circle. The zoo is about 10 minutes away; you'll see a sign in English on the left side of the road.
