  • The Bamboo Train (The term "train" being used loosely - A large bamboo platform mounted on train axles powered by a small go-kart engine). A trip to the train can be booked in most hotels or arranged with a motorbike/tuk-tuk driver. Currently it is regulated by Battambang's Tourist Police, with a standard rate of US$5 per person, minimum 2 people or US$10 for one person, with discounts for larger groups (A group of five got discounted to US$4 each). It is worthwhile to ask the driver to stop at scenic places (As they do the same trip constantly every day, they should know key places).

  • See the countryside

*Book a trip around the countryside with a motorbike or tuk-tuk driver and visit some of the surrounding temples and enjoy the views.

* Soksabike bike ride +855 12542019 , bike tour also visits the countryside but is more about seeing traditional livelihoods. Run as a social enterprise which supports the people visited, which is nice. Really good if you want to meet and talk with the people rather than just take snaps of temples.

  • Wander around the market and sample local dishes.

  • Check out riverside dancing along the river around dusk. Some serious K-Pop action goes down.

  • Take a Cooking class Many restaurants around Battambang offer cooking classes at varying prices. As of November 2010, the current places are:

* The Smoking Pot: Highly recommended by locals and The Lonely Planet. Daily courses priced at US$8.

* Ch'Ngainh! Ch'Ngainh!: A more homely and familial approach to cookery, this class is carried out at the family's home giving it a nice cosy spin in comparison to its business counterparts. Daily courses priced at US$10. (You can reach Sambath at sambath_9@yahoo.com or by phone at +855 12 63 93 50)

*Nary Kitchen: Located at Svay Por Battambang opposite the Holiday Guesthouse, the price is currently unknown. You can contact them at +855 1276 3950 to find out prices.

  • Kayak down the river +855 77 204 121 , with Green Orange Kayaks. Go on a beautiful Stung Sangker river voyage from the small village of Ksach Poy to Battambang, past riverside terraces and traditional bamboo houses. Get away from the dusty roads and learn first hand about traditional fishing and farming techniques. Half day trip, 11km.
