Brazil conjures up images of eternal revelry enlivened by samba dance mania and women parading in skimpy bikinis, obscuring their genitals with a garment the size of a postage stamp. At the other extreme is a quiet, modest little European style city nestled in the rarified mountain air of Sao Paulo state, a 4 ½ drive from bawdy Rio and just 2 ½ hours from the chaotic mega-city of Sao Paulo. Certainly it has one of the coolest and driest climates in Brazil; temperatures can plummet in the night of winter to the freezing mark. When entering the town, it feels as though you jumped continents and the overhead sign should say, “Welcome to Switzerland”.

This guide explains the anomaly of Campos do Jordao, and what makes it such a desirable destination.
