The cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill make up the area known as the Research Triangle Park, or RTP. This area is the heart of North Carolina.
Chapel Hill is most famous for its university life. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the nation's first truly public university (women and blacks could attend), and one of the most prestigious.
Chapel Hill is one of the few liberal towns in this "red" state. It is a thriving atmosphere for literature and the arts, and has a distinctly bohemian feel to it.
Franklin Street, the most lively area near the University, offers upscale shopping, gourmet restaurants, a children's museum and beautiful historic district.
