Creating a guidebook

Does anyone know if there's a guide to posting a guidebook? Although I've been posting online content for two venues for several years, this site is not user-friendly and I cannot figure out how to post one article, let alone an entire guidebook. A step-by-step instruction is what I'm seeking. Anyone know if this is available? I'm about ready to throw in the towel, having wasted hours trying to figure this site out.

Hi Spavalous,

This FAQ explains how to add articles and listings: http://www.guidegecko.com/help-publish2#how-to-add-something

In a nutshell, just browse to the destination you want to add something to, and click on "Add Something" in the top right.

Hope that helps, please reply to this thread if you have further questions!

Best,
Daniel

Hello Daniel,
Karin-Marijke asked me today to have a look on how to move forward, and I too find the whole site not user-friendly.

A] She gave me a few word templates, which I opened and found it impossible to find out what an F3 function does or doesn't [we are working on Mac's with Word 2008]. Now how does that work?
B] I tried looking at the videos at: http://www.guidegecko.com/help-publish2 but none of them work?
C] What can I do with the file that I get when I click on the: 'Download the table of contents"
D] If I go to our "user home" and under #5 go to my starting page, I end up at a general page for French Guiana. Are we suppose to add content here? If so, who is responsible for the content already there [Getting there - Getting around - Work & Study - Language - Practicalities etc...] as there are some entries there, but no sign as to who wrote that and no date, to check up on actuality or credibility.

So basically I am confused where to enter content. On the site, or in a template????

Adventurous greetings,
Coen

Hi Coen,

Thanks for your feedback. We are always interested to improve the site, and your comments are very welcome. It would be great if you can provide more suggestions as you go along.

A] She gave me a few word templates (...)

Ignore the templates. They are not for apps or ePub-based eBooks.

B] I tried looking at the videos at: http://www.guidegecko.com/help-publish2 but none of them work?

The videos work fine for us over here. You need the Flash player to play them.

The first tutorial video can be accessed at this direct URL: http://www.guidegecko.com/tutorial/video1.html. Anybody else having problems?

C] What can I do with the file that I get when I click on the: 'Download the table of contents"

You need this file only at the end, to finalize the Table of Contents for your app and eBook. As it says on the page, download it when you are finished writing (i.e., when you have entered all your content and no more errors/warnings shown on the same page)

D] If I go to our "user home" and under #5 go to my starting page, I end up at a general page for French Guiana. Are we suppose to add content here?

Yes, you are supposed to enter your content there. It actually says: "The starting page of your guide is http://www.guidegecko.com/french-guiana/travel-guide/p,127278. Enter your content there."

> If so, who is responsible for the content already there [Getting there - Getting around - Work & Study - Language - Practicalities etc...] as there are some entries there, but no sign as to who wrote that and no date, to check up on actuality or credibility.

Please see the FAQ on Web Publishing Option A at http://www.guidegecko.com/help-publish2#web-publishing. You have chosen Option A, which is the best in your case. Note: We will only take your entries for your app/eBook.

> So basically I am confused where to enter content. On the site, or in a template????

On the site, at http://www.guidegecko.com/french-guiana/travel-guide/p,127278.

Add your guide as listings and articles in the appropriate section(s), and see http://www.guidegecko.com/help-publish2#how-to-add-something for help (the text also explains it in case you have trouble with the videos).

Hope that helps!

Best,
Daniel

I had a big posting here, and it crashed on saving?

So I got the videos to work, must be the uberslow connection here in Suriname. I must say I am not too thrilled by the videos. Don't take that personal, it is just my opinion. I think you could improve the presentation skills a lot here to make it more easy to understand. The information is all there, but I have the feeling it could be presented in a better way. Have a look at some examples of what the Commoncraft guys do: http://www.commoncraft.com This is doen with minimal skills, I mean no heavy animation [which is also very nice if you can do that]. The key thing is to present your information in chunks, and not in one go. For example in you first video you present 3 steps on how to add content to your guide. Marketing classes learned me never to show the 3 steps in one view, but alway build up the sheet. Those little things you have to master and learn to improve your presentation skills.

Apart from that I would benefit from having the videos downloadable or in a podcast form. Because we are always on the road and not always have internet with us.

Adding content won't bet a problem. The question is what to do with the content that is already there? Who's is it? For example: http://www.guidegecko.com/french-guiana/get-around/p,127278,160

I would like to enter my own getting around information. What would I do?

- double post?
- edit the information already there?
- can other people edit my posts?
- why is the information already there not dated?
- how can I see who wrote the information that is already there?

Adventurous greetings,
Coen

Hi Coen,

Thanks again for the suggestions. We rather improve our apps and website than fine-tune the videos. However, we'd be delighted to exchange them with yours if you want to contribute better ones.

Regarding pre-existing content: For French Guiana, you can modify and replace the pre-existing content as you wish. If you want the entry to appear in your app/eBook, make sure that you completely remove the existing text and replace it with your own.

Best,
Daniel
