Hiawassee, is taken from"Ayuhwasi", the Cherokee word for meadow. They probably called it that because of the beautiful wildflowers that seem to spring up anywhere there is a patch of empty land. It is the county seat of Towns County and sits on beautiful Lake Chatuge. When you gaze at the waters of the lake it appears almost azure and is rimmed by mist-topped mountains.
In spring, summer and fall, Lake Chatuge is a place to have fun. You can ski, swim, boat, kayak or canoe or rent a boat from one of the marinas. It's a magical place where you will spot wild birds skimming the surface, maybe even catch a glimpse of a deer or bear on the banks or photograph the ever changing misty mountains that surround the lake.
Shopping is interesting here as you will find unique art, crafts, local food and souvenir items.
