Meet the Fleet

Even if you are only living in Hong Kong for a short time, don’t hesitate to volunteer at any of the worthy organizations that rely on community help.

You may want to sign up at the Fleet Arcade, for example, welcoming some 3,000 seamen as they arrived on three vessels. As the men and women were ferried to shore and funneled through the Fleet, it is your job to give them maps and directions, answer questions and advise them on what to see and do in Hong Kong. In addition to the obvious satisfaction of helping others, you may also reward yourself in other ways by walking a few blocks to Wan Chai, where there are pubs and live music and lots of great street action to watch.

Volunteer for Oxfam, Heifer or other international organizations.  Through Heifer, for example, you may end up working a booth at the private Chinese International School fair and enjoying the mix of people as much as the ambience – the school sits at the top of a hill, amid lush trees and swarms of students.

There are many more volunteer opportunities, of course, so find your area of interest and pitch in, and signing on to yet another opportunity to meet new friends.
