Do’s and Don’ts at any Hotels for the Intrepid Traveller
Halloween is approaching and according to that theme, we have brought you a series of do’s and don’ts when you decide to check into any hotels anywhere in the world! Here is the list to abide to, for the fearless traveller. One phrase to remember, “it is better to be safe than sorry”.
10 things you should and should not do when you check into hotels, in a Chinese perspective (highly based on Chinese culture).
When you first check into a hotel room, before you enter, you have to ring the doorbell or knock on the door. After that, it is advisable to say something along the lines of “Excuse me, I’m here to stay” or “I’m sorry for intruding/disturbing”. If you are multilingual, it is better if you can repeat it once more in the native language of the country you are visiting.
When entering the room, enter in a sideways position. This is to ensure that if there are spirits in the room, to allow them space to leave. You do not want to go against them or knock into them.
If you have a pair of slippers, place them in a position that is facing up and down at the doorway. Spirits who tries to enter the room will follow the direction of the slippers and leave accordingly.
It is a good practice to place a small amount of salt and a glass of water at the bedside table of the hotel room. This is believed to be able to chase away the spirits.
Before you use the toilet bowl, do flush it once first. This is to make sure that the previous spirits or “dirty things” are gone as well.
Do not touch the position of the Bible or the Quran especially if it is opened to a certain page and positioned in the room. Do not attempt to close the book either.
For you to repel the spirits, yellow clothes are preferred. Avoid wearing colours like black or red. Side note: Yellow is a colour for royalties, so maybe the spirits are also afraid of them?
When you are about to sleep at night, close the toilet door and try not to leave the lights for the toilet on throughout the night.
While sleeping, it is not good to face the mirror directly as it gives off negative vibes. Spirits are attracted and dwell in those vibes. At times, we understand that you do not have a choice due to the arrangements in certain hotels, so you might want to use a blanket, curtain, bed sheets or something to cover the mirror while you sleep. And hopefully, not in white.
Before turning in for the night, place your shoes and slippers away from the bed. The shoes are encouraged to be placed in a messy manner, preferably to put them in a position where one is facing up and the other, down.
