The smoking ban at the Oktoberfest in 2010 was a success, they had tried different approaches in previous years, but last year it went quite well.
Security is very visible in every tent and they come pay the offender a visit very quickly in general. As there are over 10,000 people in the major tents it can be difficult, but by and large it was a success and I was able to breathe at the Oktoberfest which was great!
Yes, you can smoke outside in the beer gardens which surround the tents.
The Hiipodrom tent has just built a new balcony outside at the rear on the first floor for smokers. This area used to be the VIP area in past years but now is reserved for smokers. It overlooks the Theresienhoehe.
@Fernando: I just wonder how they want to do it, as it is virtually impossible to leave the tent and get back in once they are full. Maybe they allow smoking in the outside areas attached to the tent? But as far as I remember, not every tent has such a 'fenced' outside area? Even if they have, it wouldl fill up quickly and the few doors leading there would not allow enough people in and out.
Hi Daniel, officially smoking is forbidden in Bavaria and that means it´s also forbidden in beer tents. Only this year the authorities will make an exeption to this rule since the owners of the tents can´t react on the ban so quickly as to instal new locations for smokers. That´s a pretty lame excuse to me, but that´s the way it is. Why do you ask, you haven´t become a smoker, have you?
Smoking is forbidden in the tents this year. Despite having an exemption for this year only, the tent owners have decided to comply with the law as it is the rest of Bavaria and forbid smoking. They have not announced how they are going to get round this, presumably you will need to go outside to the beer garden but how this is managed when the tents are full I do not know.
