Whether you are attuned to nature, fond of outdoor activities or just someone looking to relax and enjoy a holiday, a trip to Karnataka has much to offer. It is rich in bio-diversity, and has a variety of flora and fauna. There are rugged and scenic trekking routes in the western ghats and wildlife sanctuaries. Enjoy rock climbing at Ramnagar (on the Bengaluru-Mysore route) and Yana (Uttara Kannada), trekking, or aero sports like hang gliding and para-jumping in places like the Nandi Hills.
A trip to Karnataka is incomplete without a visit to a wildlife sanctuary, even if you are not passionate about nature. Earlier, resorts near wildlife sanctuaries offered safaris to the jungle in jeeps/vans, but effective from September 1, 2011, only Jungle Lodges and Resorts (a government of Karnataka undertaking) ,is allowed to conduct safaris. In a few places, the forest department also conducts safaris.
Jungle Lodges and Resorts Ltd runs a chain of eco-friendly resorts in Karnataka (Refer under "hotels"). Safaris organized by the Jungle Lodges group are well organized, with expert naturalists (like Basavanna HS from Bandipur seen in the photo) accompanying the visitors.
Take a leisurely nature walk, and revel in the sights and smells of unspoilt places.
A cruise down a river offers a different perspective, as you observe the rich diversity of bird life, as well as wild animals on the banks. Crusing down the Bhadra is a bird lover's delight, while floating down the Kabini offers delightful scenes of elephants bathing and playing along the banks! The river Cauvery is a paradise for anglers.
If you are interested in water sports, Karnataka offers many opportunities. You can go rafting on the river Cauvery or Kali, or take part in other water sports. Drift along the river in a coracle, and twirl around with the current, watching nature's wonders on either side of the river!
So no matter what your interests, you have a wide choice and are sure to enjoy the experiences!
