A few snippets will help you adjust to local conditions:

  • In most households, footwear is taken off outside the door.
  • It is usual to join the palms in greeting (called namaskaram) rather than shake hands.
  • The traditional mode of eating is with the right hand. If you're eating off a banana leaf, there's something to be done after you've finished.....fold the upper half of the leaf towards you, to signal that you have finished and enjoyed the meal!!
  • The pace of life is on the whole relaxed and laid back, so do not be surprised at delays and slow transaction time at banks and other institutions.

It is also important to remember some tips while traveling.
