Though most visitors tend to visit Bengaluru and southern Karnataka, a trip to other parts like the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka can be rewarding, especially if you are a wildlife enthusiast. The Dandeli wildlife sanctuary is one of the many attractive destinations in Karnataka, and is now part of Project Tiger.

Vegetation: Though animal sighting is difficult due to the thick vegetation, you will enjoy the drive through the moist deciduous forests full of valuable trees like the teak, rosewood, evergreens and hardwoods.

Wildlife: The forests harbor varied mammals including the tiger, elephant, sambar, wild dogs, gaur, sloth bear, wild boar and langur and 200 species of birds. The latter includes the Malabar trogon, grey junglefowl, blue tailed bee eater, crimson backed sunbird and different species of hornbills, drongos, thrushes, woodpeckers, orioles, barbets and parakeets. It is said that the black panther has been sighted here. You might see the giant flying squirrel, Malabar giant squirrel, reptiles like the gliding lizard, as well as some snakes and crocodiles near the rivers.

Special attractions: The Kavala caves are a fascinating network of limestone caves, sacred to Shiva as Pashupati, the Lord of animals. As one proceeds through the caves, they become smaller, while at the center is a huge stagalmite in the shape of a Shiva Linga. This is the venue for an annual celebration during Shivaratri.

A vantage point inside the park is the Shiroli peak, which gives a panoramic view of the Sahyadri mountains, as well as stunning sunsets.

Season: There are heavy rains during the monsoon, so the best season to visit is between August and June.

The forest department conducts tours to the sanctuary, and the good roads inside the sanctuary make it easily accessible all through the year.

Tips: You can choose an accommodation from these options: nature camp, forest rest houses, private hotels and the Kali Wilderness camp.

If you are allergic to smells, avoid the caves, as they are pungent with the smell of bats inhabiting them.
