Nakamura House or Ke as it is known in Japanese is the carefully preserved traditional Okinawan house of the Nakamura family.  It is a wonderful example of how wealthy locals lived in Okinawa.

It is an incredibly beautiful house with its red clay roof tiles and wooden construction.  It is furnished with artefacts and works of art from the past.  The kitchen is built on the ground level with a dirt floor and it is fascinating to see the kitchen implements, water storage containers and fire pits.

Outside the house there is a large storage house built on stilts to prevent damp getting to the grain and rice stored within.  Behind the house are a few animal stalls including a traditional pigpen.  Although Nakamura ke is fairly small, it is easy to spend quite a while here browsing around the garden and taking photos around every corner.  If you have children, and even if you don't, buy some fish food for the Koi in the pond at the entrance to the house.  These colourful fish are always hungry no matter how many tourists are feeding them.

Also, take some time to visit the small shop where you will find a few different souvenirs from the norm.  Sit down at the table at the front of the store and order some Okinawa Soba if you are feeling hungry or else just enjoy a complimentary cup of green tea and some traditional black sugar candy.
