Central Market is a collection of handicraft and souvenir shops and art galleries protected by the Malaysian Heritage Society. Once an open wet market, the current permanent structure was built in 1930 to house all its vendors. Unchanged since then, the building preserves till today an unmistakeable quintessential charm of the days of yore. This sense of antiquity, however, does not extend to the higher-than-necessary prices at some shops.

Nonetheless, visitors to Central Market can expect to be spoilt for choice for traditional batik and Chinese costumes, home decor items, beaded jewellery, handwoven rattan baskets, antiques and carved wooden statues. Prices are fixed so don't try bargaining, and remember to ask permission from shop owners before snapping a photo of anything.

Once your shopping is complete, don't forget to head over to the adjoining building for a healthy dose of art at The Annexe Gallery, a frequent host of installations, performances and exhibitions. Couple your visit to Central Market with Dayabumi Complex, which is also nearby.
