Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia and a popular weekend destination from Singapore. It is accessible by coach, train or plane.
Bus from Singapore to KL
The bus ride to Kuala Lumpur (KL) from Singapore is 5-6 hours. The prices start from $30, one-way, and vary from the type of coach and travelling date.
Stopovers
If you are travelling by day, the coach will stop by at food centres and public washrooms for your convenience. You should prepare some Malaysian ringgit to make any purchase. Night trips usually do not have any stopovers.
Trains are the traditional way to reach Kuala Lumpur. The air-conditioned daytime KTM train takes 8 hours, compared to the 5-hour coach ride. It costs $34 from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur.
Trains depart from Singapore's Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, which will close in July 2011. Unless you are a history buff who would appreciate its historical significance, you might prefer taking the coach or plane. The trains are old and worn out, and requires more travelling time.
The tickets are charged in Singapore dollars when boarding in Singapore, and the same amount in Malaysian ringgit when boarding in Malaysia. This means that you pay about half lesser on the way back!
Trains can also be delayed by a few hours, so it might not be a safe option. See Singapore-Malaysia by Train for more.
Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by Plane
If you want to skip the long-winding journey and do not mind spending more, Kuala Lumpur is just 1-hour away by plane, from $45 one-way.
This price may be just slightly above the coach ticket of $30, but take note that promotional air tickets might not come with free baggage allowance. This will add another $20 or more to your total cost.
Airlines Flying to Kuala Lumpur
