Si Phan Don also known as Four Thousand Islands is a group of islands in the Mekong River in Southern Laos. However, do take note that more than half the islands are submerged during the rainy season.
Most travellers go to only 3 islands in The Four Thousand Islands: Don Khong, Don Khon and Don Det.
DonKhong is the biggest island but it is the least touristy. You are able to hire a motorbike to visit the beautiful countryside and the villages that are on the island. It also has the best accommodation among the 3 islands. Electricity has been on the island for about 10 years, thus it is pretty stable.
Most people head to Don Det or Don Khon, where accommodation is cheaper. You are able to travel between the 2 islands on an old French bridge, but you have to pay 20,000 Kip (USD 2.50) per person to cross the bridge. From the island, you are able to visit Li Phi Waterfalls by walking or by hiring a bicycle. Do take note that electricity just arrived on these islands about 2 years ago. The islands get blackout about once a month, thus, a torch is a necessity if you are going there.
