Not long ago, Mersing was yet another sleepy fisherman's village on the road up north to Kuantan and Terengganu. Today, it is the take-off point for boats to Pulau Tioman, Pulau Besar and other islands in the Seribuat Archipelago.
The town sleeps early and wakes up early, but there are still pockets of life if you walk along the main streets post sunset. Beach-wearied travellers can look out for familiar blessings such as Maybank (Jln Ismail), which can cash travellers cheques, internet cafes with rates as low as RM1.50 per hour, grocery stores and a comforting bottle of cold beer.
Hotels in Mersing are numerous, so you can rest assured that if you find yourself stranded, at least one will definitely fit your budget. If you're in a hurry to see as much as you can, hop into Omar's and ask him about his island-hopping tour. Otherwise, head down to the Mersing Jetty and buy that ticket to wherever it is you are going!
