Add a Point to the Map

Shikina En is the summer palace of the King of the Ryukyu Kingdom.  Although it is nowhere near a monorail station so less convenient to visit it is well worth making the effort.  Either by doing the Shuri area walking tour or by taking a bus.

Shikina En was completely destroyed during World War II so had to be reconstructed using plans and photographs of the original buildings and gardens.  In 2000 it was made a Unesco World Heritage Site.  It is a lot less showy than Shuri Castle and is built in the traditional Okinawan style using unadorned wood and red clay roof tiles.  The palace building is set amongst a beautifully laid out garden complete with Koi pond and tea pavilion, a fruit tree orchard and various streams and springs.  Shikina En is an ideal spot to wander around, cool down and relax after the Shuri Area walking tour.
