Naha City is the capital of Okinawa Prefecture and is the home of the Naha International Airport. Many visitors will land at the airport and then simply drive north to the various resort hotels. However, there is plenty to see and do in Naha and it is worth spending a day or two in the city either at the beginning or end of your trip.
The two main sightseeing areas in Naha City are the central Kokusai Dori area and the Shuri area. The Kokusai Dori area with the market streets, Heiwa Dori and Matsuyama Dori are popular for eating and shopping. It also has a lively nightlife with numerous bars and the local drinking and eating establishments called Izakayas. Shuri is quieter and known more for its historical value. Shuri Castle and Shikina En are the highlights in this area.
You can visit individual attractions or try one of the three walking tours available. The monorail makes visiting most areas of Naha very convenient and easy. There are numerous hotels to suit all budgets available in the central Naha area, most within easy walking distance of the monorail.
