Add a Point to the Map

The tiny village of Kijoka is the home of the traditional Okinawan material known as Bashofu.  Bashofu material is made using thread made from the fibres of a fruitless type of banana tree.  One kimono uses the thread from 200 trees.  As the entire process is handmade the material is very expensive. Look for products to buy in various souvenir shops around Okinawa.

Visitors can visit the Ogimi Son Ritsu Bashofu Kaikan in Kijoka.  It is run by the Kijoka Bashofu Association for the Preservation of Bashofu's Cultural Heritage.  On the first floor is an exhibition hall where you can see some of the products made with Bashofu material.  On the 2nd floor is a workshop where you can observe the material being woven.  However, please be aware that as this is a working area respect for the workers is required. No touching or photography is allowed.

Feel free to wander around the village where you will find a few small tea shops and traditional, red roofed houses.
