This tiny town deep in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in northeast Georgia is rich in history and legend. Here you will find the Nacoochee Indian Mound, marked by a round, white gazebo.  The mound is the burial place of ancient Indians. The Smithsonian Institute excavated the area in 1914 and found that it once held over 300 dwellings. But it's a colorful legend that gives the town its mystic appeal.

According to the legend, this is the final resting place for two star-crossed Indian lovers, Sautee and Nacoochee, who belonged to warring tribes. Sautee, a brave of the Chickasaw tribe, and Nacoochee, daughter of a Cherokee chief, met and fell in love.  They secretly met one night and ran away to nearby Yonah Mountain where they enjoyed a few idyllic days together.  Then they had to pay the piper. They confronted Nacoochee's father, Chief Wahoo, and suggested creating peace between the two nations. He would not consider such a thing and instead ordered Sautee thrown from the high cliffs of Yonah Mountain. Nacoochee broke free from her father's braves who held her captive and leaped from the cliff to join her lover.  As she smashed into the ground at the base of the cliff, the dying Santee dragged his broken body to join her and the star-crossed pair locked in a fatal embrace. Chief Wahoo was devastated by the death of his daughter and at last repented. He buried the lovers together there on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in a burial mound. Supposedly, their spirits are together forever and roam this area.

You really can't blame them because for a small place,Sautee Nacoochee is filled with fun attractions.
