Sinema SingaporeLocal cinematography at its best!Going to the movies have never been more unique than in Singapore. Cinemas have been proliferating around the towns of this small red dot. In addition, we have all kinds of movies, from Bollywood, Hollywood to local delights, you name it, and Singapore has it. But for now, let us all concentrate on this exclusive place for local films, Sinema.
Sinema got its name because it is Singapore’s pride and it still keeps the function of a cinema. In short, the name came from this formula, Singapore + Cinema = Sinema. This is how Sinema was born in December 2007.
Located in the heart of a shopping and retail district, at Mount Sophia, it is cozily situated in a building called Old School. The white building together with a rustic background is home to this unique location. Neatly shelved beneath a flight of winding stairs is a small shop where the box office of the cinema is located. We ordered our film to watch and got back pink tickets! Food and drinks are also to be bought here over the counter.
Other memorabilia include movie posters of most local films, DVDs, music CDs and even souvenir t-shirts. This tiny but cozy environment is the shelter and retail space for Sinema.
Heading out of the small hidey-hole, is where the rest of the action begins. There are many metal tables and chairs for one to talk about everything under the sun. Even directors could be spotted here, chatting away about their latest thoughts and ideas. This place has become a brainstorming hotspot, which is needed for the improvements of the local film industry in Singapore, to set higher standards and how to reach that ultimate goal.
Still has no idea what we are going on about? There are sessions organized by Sinema’s founders, Randy Ang and Nicholas Chee together with the deputy executive director Olivia Loh, at these said tables and chairs. Their aim is to search and nurture all talented local filmmakers and the various individuals involved in the whole filmmaking process and industry.
Anyway, heading upwards, at the end of the stairs, you would find yourself being welcomed by a few rows of plush and inviting sofas inside a room furnished with a big Panasonic screen and a superb sound system.
Before heading in, a Sinema personnel would tear the pink tickets and return you the ticket stubs. One must note that seating is on a first come first served basis. So in order to get your favourite seat, arrive early! Free seating!
The various acting skills portrayed by the actors and actresses were indeed eye-opening as these films falls under a category where locals seldom would attend. Aside from the movies, one would be able to notice the wide variety of films they offer, from features to shorts. This is indeed a unique place, to unwind, to chill, and to admire the works of local filmmakers.
So, to book tickets, do check out the screening schedule on this website http://www.sinema.sg/oldschool/ and then call 63369707 or email oldschool@sinema.sg to reserve your tickets!
