The War Memorial was erected to commemorate those who lost their lives in World War II. It is made of 4 columns, representing the 4 different ethnic groups of Singapore. Remains of people who perished in the war were unearthed in 1962 from various locations around the island, and were consolidated and buried here for rememberance. The monument was completed in 1967, and memorial services are held in the park surrounding the memorial every year on the 15th of February.
