The Peranakan culture in Singapore is unique and plays a significant role in the country's history. The word "peranakan", which means "locally born" in Malay, is used to describe people who descended from interracial marriages between foreign traders and local women.

These foreign traders were attracted to Singapore due to its strategic position as a trading hub for goods and commodities, and the Peranakan culture is one that combines influences from local and foreign ones.

The Peranakan Museum offers insight into practices, rituals and the Peranakan culture in general, and also houses the largest collection of peranakan artefacts in the world.

Housing ten different galleries, the museum takes you on a journey through the history of the peranakans and allows you to experience this distinct Southeast Asian culture firsthand.
