Istana Kampong Glam or 'Kampong Glam Palace' is a historical and heritage site first built by Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor in the 1820s. It was his home and stood as the centre of Kampong Glam district. The present Istana Kampong Glam is about half the size of the original Istana Kampong Glam. It was built from 1836 to 1843, commissioned by the son of Sultan Hussein, Sultan Ali Iskandar . Many believe that the designer of the place is George Drumgoole Coleman.

Istana Kampong Glam is made up of the Istana building and the Istana Compound. The Istana building has been renovated and restored but retains its original Palladian architecture. It houses the Malay Heritage Centre and museum. There are two storeys in this building. The Istana Compound is beautiful and serene. Gelam trees can be found and were the source of inspiration from which Kampong Glam got its name.

There are a number of exhibits on display in the compound such as a bugis boat and an old yellow carriage. There is also a small replica of a Malay Palace on display.

The Istana Compound is picturesque with its carefully maintained garden setting and is a lovely place to visit if one is in the vicinity. There are shaded seats around the compound, which also makes it a great rest stop.
