The Singapore Botanic Garden was a pet project of Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore. Although the first garden was closed in 1829 after just seven years, a second garden was begun in 1859 when the Agri Horticultural Society was granted land in Tanglin by the colonial government. This second garden is now the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

The Gardens was initially planned as a leisure garden and ornamental park and was handed over to the government in 1874 for maintenance of the site.

The top attraction is indisputably the National Orchid Garden within its compound. Other attractions include the Rainforest, the Evolution Garden, the Ginger Garden, the Botany Centre, and the Jacob Ballas Children Garden. All of them are worth visiting, especially if you have an afternoon to spare. Also have a quick look at the beautiful Tanglin Gate.

The Garden is today a popular spot for Singaporeans to have a picnic on weekends or public holidays. Wedding couples have also favoured this place when taking their wedding photos so it is not uncommon to see many wedding couples dressed in their wedding gowns and suits in the park. There are also many signs placed throughout the Garden to aid those who are unsure of their location.
