The German Girl Shrine located within the Ketam Mountain Bike Park is one of the more bizarre shrines in Singapore. The shrine is a bright yellow shack which makes it easy to spot as it stands out from the surrounding greenery.

The legend behind the shrine is that the young German daughter of a coffee plantation manager fell to her death in the quarry behind her house as she was running away from British soldiers who had come to arrest her family at the end of World War I. Her body was discovered a day later by the plantation workers who covered her body in sand and placed offerings at her makeshift grave everytime they passed it. Eventually a group of Chinese workers on the island gave her remains a proper burial.

The unique part of the story is that somehow, this Roman-Catholic German girl has become a Taoist deity who has granted wishes to many devotees over the years. Devotees regularly visit the shrine to offer thanks and prayers and they bring along with them all sorts of offerings which you can see in the shrine. From beer to fruits to cosmetics, the shrine has it all.

Some devotees have also been known to bring along German-speaking mediums when they visit the shrine. The urn that is housed in the shrine is apparently a replica of the original urn of the German girl's remains after her grave was exhumed in 1974 as the original was reported to have been stolen.

Although the shrine is relatively small and there is really not a great deal to see, it would not hurt to just offer some prayer and make a wish to see if the legend is really true.
