The Chek Jawa Wetlands is located at the eastern end of Pulau Ubin and is one of the richest ecosystems in Singapore. It is an area where six unique habitats meet and mix and is thus attractive to nature lovers. The area was off limits to tourists before December 2000 and in recent years, more amenities have been added to the area for the convenience of visitors as well as to ensure that the ecosystem is not disturbed by the flow of human traffic.

The opening of the new amenities in July 2007 allow visitors to conduct their own tour of the Chek Jawa wetlands without a guide as the area is now covered with boardwalks to ensure that visitors do not cause an unwanted impact on the environment. The boardwalks have also made it easier for visitors to walk through the wetlands and observe the flora and fauna found there.

Stretching 1 kilometre, the boardwalk is divided into two sections, namely the coastal boardwalk and the mangrove boardwalk.

The coastal boardwalk is a relaxing walk along the eastern coast of Pulau Ubin as the waves ebb and flow beneath your feet. Along the coastal boardwalk, visitors can also get to observe the coastal forest and shore and the flora and fauna found there.

The mangrove boardwalk allows visitors to walk through the mangrove swamp and observe various animals and plants that call the mangrove swamp home. Most of the flora and fauna can only be seen during low tides so it is best to find out when the low tide period is before visiting the wetlands to avoid disappointment.

There is also a 21-metre high viewing tower called the Jejawi Tower located within the wetlands. The tower offers scenic views of the surrounding waters as well as an overview of the wetlands. A mini-museum is also located in the wetlands which showcases some of the flora and fauna that can be found throughout the wetlands.

Guided tours of the wetlands are available frequently so check the National Parks website to sign up for them. Book in advance as the tours are relatively popular.
