A stone's throw away from Tuas Checkpoint stands Asia Pacific Breweries or Tiger Brewery as it is better known for its flagship beer, Tiger Beer.
A guided tour around the brewery costs S$10.70, a price inclusive of an hour of free house beers at their warm, cozy, and nicely decorated Tiger Tavern. It is required to make advance bookings, through email or phone and tour timings are fixed from Mondays to Fridays at 10.30am, 2pm, 4pm, and 6.30pm.
Note that tours are only conducted if more than 10 people have signed up, but if you are travelling alone and would like to join in, just give them a ring to check and tag along.
The Tiger Brewery Tour will most probably interest brewers or beer-fans, although the thought of an hour of free flowing beers is enough to attract almost everyone.
Everyone on the Tiger Brewery Tour will first have a walkthrough around their little museum located outside the Tiger Tavern. Here, you are introduced to the history of Tiger Beer and the competitions it faced with Malayan Breweries. Old photographs, articles, various marketing advertisements, memorabilia, and awards and accolades are displayed around the mini-museum, which your guide will explain about in length.
After a tour of the mini-museum, the tour proceeds to the computerized and fully automated brewery house and packaging hall, which can get pretty hot and stuffy. The tour then ends back at the mini-museum into the Tiger Tavern for a relaxing hour of free house beers, which include Tiger beer, Heineken beer, Baron's strong brew, Anchor beer, Guinness, and ABC extra stout.
Do remember to bring your ID (passport or identification card) along, as it is required to trade for a security pass to enter the brewery.
A fun fact: the story to the naming of Tiger beer is relatively unknown although it is generally believed that Tiger beer was named so as tigers are regarded as strong and powerful animals by the Chinese and would provide strong competition in the alcoholic beverage industry which it has indeed proven so. However, according to hearsay, Tiger beer was named during a board meeting after a board member randomly mentioned that he heard someone had hunted down a tiger and killed it.
