If you dislike heavy ‘human traffic’, there might be some frayed tempers when visiting the West, a largely populated and busy region, comprising of Jurong, Telok Blangah, Dempsey Hill and Holland Village.

Bordering close to Malaysia, a surge of activity is constant, especially around Jurong Point, a large and newly expanded shopping mall with various shopping, food and beverage options.

Family-orientated attractions include the Jurong Bird Park, and Science Center Singapore, which sees perpetual crowds.  The Jurong Bird Park is a must-see for bird lovers while the Science Center is an ‘edutainment’ museum, which promises to be educating and entertaining simultaneously, pertaining to scientific topics.

For some low-key cultural fixes, visit National University of Singapore. Other than being one of Singapore’s most prominent universities, it also houses three museums with permanent Asian art exhibitions at its NUS Museums.

For nature lovers, Mount Faber would be the best bet for a quiet retreat. It is a hilltop destination, which offers good views of the surrounding area amidst lush greenery. The Jewel Box capitalizes on its favored scenery with its glass-fronted and grandeur restaurants, if one is ready to blow more than S$50 for a meal.

Expatriates and local also live it up at Dempsey and Holland Village, which comes with reliable food and beverage options, dotted with art and craft shops.

Holland Village comes alive at night, and has wallet-friendly Wala Wala as popular pub and watering hole. Business is also brisk at Bistro Petit Salut, a much talked about French restaurant.

Dempsey Hill is strictly for those who are willing to spend, as it is an exclusive and secluded hangout for rich tastes. Shang Antique specializes in antiques for deep pockets, Samy’s Curry is an authentic Indian restaurant, and The White Rabbit is a restaurant with extraordinary interiors.

Parallel to the nature of these refined and expensive places, the next recommendation of a truly laidback place where you can really sit back, relax like locals, and spend a day of fishing is Labrador Park. Couples visit this place for an intimate setting, as well.
