Top 10 Spooky Places to Visit in Singapore

Go on... Scare yourself!

In Europe, there is the Stone Hedge. In the United States, there are various ghost towns and famous hauntings. However, in Singapore, we have our own view on the supernatural and it’s largely based on the unique and cultural Chinese beliefs of souls and spirits. But here, we give you the spookiest places in Singapore, for you to visit. And maybe, give you inspiration to write an “elegy”.

Bukit Brown Cemetery (Seh Ong Cemetery Village)

Might be known to you as “kopi hill” or literally translates to coffee hill, this is a public cemetery for Chinese opened back in the 20th century. Now, it is abandoned and therefore, isolated and dark. Visit here if you dare.

Also, witness the largest tombstone in Singapore, as big as ten 3-room HDB flats of Ong Sam Leong!

Fun Fact: Bukit Brown MRT station, which is part of the Circle Line, remains un-operational because the only structure is this cemetery.

Punggol Forest Sadako Well (Punggol White House/Matilda House)

There are a couple of things to visit while you are here. The first is the Matilda House which was the dwelling place of the Cashins back in the old days. However, in the early 1970s, the government of Singapore acquired the Punggol Kampung House or Matilda House from them.

Today, the house is in very bad shape as it has been abandoned for some time and due to wear and tear. And so, a perfect place to look and scout for ghouls.

Next is just like a scene out of the Japanese hit, The Ring. There is even an old and ancient well! Do you remember how the ghost supposedly crawled out of the well and onto your television sets? This is really eerie. And there are no doubts about how the nickname given came about, “Sadako Well”.

Old Changi General Hospital

This landmark has been the core of most spooky encounters. For a more exciting adventure, head to the wards with the high ceilings, as those are where the wounded military soldiers are housed at and lots of them breathe their last breath there, while lying on the hospital beds. Do not forget, the mortuary too!

Old Commando Barrack

Rumours are aplenty that there are some rooms located in the barracks that were sealed up into large brick walls for unknown reasons. Many prisoners of war had their last moments there and a said portal to the underworld exist in the building too.

Red House at Pasir Ris

An abandoned and run down house in Pasir Ris, which is said to have a rocking chair with a doll atop of it on the second floor is the next haunted location. Not spooked yet? What about knowing that maybe the pair of stone statues in front of the house changes direction at different times of the day?

Mount Pleasant Cemetery (Gymkhana Ave)

The whole location is said to be Pontianak-infested (spirits of women who died during childbirth). Therefore, although music to the ears of ghost hunters, it is eerie to most. If possible, you are advised to stay away from this stretch of road, or enter/drive through at your own risk.

Buangkok Link

This place is near the old Woodbridge hospital, Singapore’s former mental hospital. Along this stretch of road, there were reports of strange encounters including headless spirits and banana ghosts. If you drive past and observe carefully, one would be able to spot banana trees along the way. So, be prepared to roam into the realm of reality, or not. Rustic surroundings are only included in the day.

Kranji Ghost Town

Located at the junction of Lim Chu Kang road and Neo Tiew road, the dim moonlight shines upon a deserted estate by night. This area was once a bustling town, with a children’s playground, a wet market, a hawker centre and a block of flats. However, the town seemed to have been vacated overnight and became Singapore’s very own ghost town. Even driving past it is an eerie experience especially when it is located so near to the various dairy farms and plots of land gazetted to be cemeteries.

Dairy Farm House

Driving along the stretch of road named the Dairy Farm Road, leading to the BKE, to your left, you will pass by a derelict house. This particular house named the Dairy Farm house has an unknown history. However, you will see empty bottles hanging on sticks and plants surrounding the house, a weird sight indeed. This is maybe to warn explorers about something or to let the plants grow, the results are up to you to imagine. So gear up and proceed with caution.

Devil’s Bend

Located at Old Upper Thomson Road, this is the very track of a Grand Prix race back in the 1960s. However, due to high fatality rates, this was closed off in the 1970s. This is said to be where a huge number of racers lost their lives as it is an especially sharp bend, followed by the fact that it is just beside a cliff. Many racers got flung out and fell into the cliff.
