What's been called Lugang Assembly Hall (鹿港人民公會堂) since its inauguration in 1928 now has an additional name: Lugang Fragrant Osmanthus Alley Artists Village (鹿港的桂花巷藝術村). It's something of a misnomer, however, as no artists live here and very little art is produced within the walls of this attractive building. Nevertheless, the works displayed and sold here  - which include classicial wooden furniture, woodcarvings, and paper art that imitates koji pottery - are well worth browsing. There's also a good selection of Chinese-language books about Lugang.

The Assembly Hall/Artists Village is in the heart of the "Lugang Old Street" area. Amid the street's single-story redbrick dwellings, it sticks out on account of its height and its whitewashed exterior. Like many colonial buildings, it is concrete and steel, with cement roof tiles. Built for public meetings and other events, the hall was paid for largely by subscription. Koo Hsien-jung (辜顯榮, 1866-1937), leader of the family that built was is now Lugang Folk Arts Museum, was a major donor, as were the region's sugar merchants.

Frequent buses from Changhua and Taichung stop along Zhongshan Road, from where it's a short walk to the Assembly Hall.
