Add a Point to the Map

Inaugurated in 2008, Shunsian Temple (順賢宮) doesn't have much history. However, it's already become a major cultural site on account of its role in the annual Songjiang Battle Array (宋江陣) festivities, its impressive size, and also because it boasts an unusual relic of the goddess Mazu.

After pouring concrete for part of the roof, the construction workers laboring to build the temple returned to their homes for the night. The following morning, when checking to see if the concrete had set properly, they found something the faithful consider miraculous: The face of Mazu had appeared amid the stains and discolorations. If you go inside the temple, a volunteer is likely to call you over to a TV screen linked to a remote-controlled camera which points at the patch of unpainted concrete where Mazu's eyes, nose and chin can be made out.

As you'd expect in a shrine as big as this one, Mazu isn't the only deity. Dizangwang and the neighborhood land god are also worshiped here. While you're here, do wander upstairs to enjoy some fine paintings.

The body of water in front of the temple is called Holy Mother Lake (聖母湖); a hiking trail goes through the forest behind.

The temple is just off Taiwan Highway 3, close to the 404km marker, opposite Shih Chien University (實踐大學). Buses between Qishan (旗山) and Tainan will stop here if you ask the driver in advance.
