Hsinchu's only remaining city gate dates from 1827, a year after Zheng Yong-xi (the scholar-official who built Jinshi Mansion) organized 47 of the town's leading citizens to petition the imperial court in Beijing for permission to replace the bamboo palisade surrounding the settlement with an earthen wall faced with brick and stone. Like many infrastructure projects of that era, it was paid for by public subscription rather than government money. The new wall measured 2,838m in circumference; it was 4.6m high, about 4.9m wide and encompassed about 55 hectares of land.

Thoroughfares leading to the four gates, among them Beimen Street, were widened to 3.8m. This not only made transportation more convenient, but also conformed to ancient Chinese ideas that certain distances and measurements are more auspicious than others; in this case, the ideal dimension was one and two tenths zhang (丈).

In 1902, the colonial authorities ordered the demolition of the entire wall and all but one of the gates. The surviving portal, Yingxi Old East Gate (迎曦東門城, "welcoming the sun east gate"), is so named because it faces east. With a granite foundation, 24 columns and a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof, it's a sight that's more impressive at night than during the day thanks to sympathetic lighting. Access to the gate is through an under-road walkway.

One stretch of what used to be Hsinchu's moat (and was for a time a sewer) is now a lovely 600m-long decorative waterway, lined with trees, flowerbeds and lawns. This is the city's favorite promenade, and like the gate you'll enjoy it most if you come on an evening.

From Hsinchu TRA Station, walk northwest along Zhongzheng Road. The gate is less than 300m from the railway station.
