Designed to educate as much as entertain, the National Science and Technology Museum (國立科學工藝博物館) is for local and expatriate families one of south Taiwan's most popular sights. With a total of seven floors (including one basement level), you can be sure you'll find something engaging.

If you've an interest in East Asian history, you'll likely enjoy the Chinese Achievements exhibition; before entering the museum, spend some time examining the replica armillary sphere (an instrument used to make astronomical measurements) in front of the main building.

Other permanent exhibitions focus on air and space navigation, Taiwan's industrial history, water resources, textiles and transportation. The Mitigration of Natural Hazards section on the second floor will appeal if you're from a place which has neither earthquakes nor typhoons. The typhoon simulator gives an idea of just how strong the wind can blow. Even better is the earthquake chamber, decked out like a typical Taiwanese living room. Over the course of eight minutes, it rocks and shudders to simulate tremors of magnitude one, three, five, and seven. Finally, it tips and shakes at a strength (magnitude 7.3) and for a duration (over a minute) matching that of the 921 earthquake of 1999

The museum's IMAX theater sometimes shows 3D movies (NT$150 per person; non-3D movies NT$100 per person).

A taxi from the rear entrance of Kaohsiung Main Railway Station costs around NT$100. City bus no. 60, caught from the front of the main station, is slower but much cheaper (NT$12 one way).
