Perhentian Kecil is extremely popular with the backpacking crowd, and the choice of accommodation reflects that. Majority of the chalets are located along Pasir Panjang (long beach). Rooms are basic, mostly in the form of wooden chalets and longhouses. Most rooms are fan-cooled but the more expensive options have air-conditioning. All rooms come with towels and soap. Average rates are between RM40-80. Also good to note that electricity on the island is shut off between 2pm-6pm daily.
Some of the better chalets on Perhentian Kecil include Matahari Chalet, Mohsin Chalet and Moonlight Chalet, with Matahari standing as the pick of the litter due to its good range of clean rooms at affordable prices. The last time we visited (October 2010), Rock Garden was undergoing massive construction.
Accommodation at Perhentian Besar is slightly more upscale, with average rates between RM80-150. It literally pays off to visit Perhentian Besar during the low season (October to January/early February) because room rates can drop RM50 from high season prices. Watercolours Paradise Resort is a great place to stay on Perhentian Besar because of its large clean rooms, friendly service and excellent restaurant. Other sleeping options include The Reef, Coral View Island Resort and Perhentian Island Resort.
